Magnifica Humanitas: Catholic Thought for the Digital Age
This week, Pope Leo XIV released his first encyclical, "Magnificent Humanity," which reflects on artificial intelligence and the protection of human dignity. Please join Aspen Digital and the Religion & Society Program for a conversation exploring this document and its commentary on artificial intelligence and the protection of human dignity with Vilas Dhar of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, Kim Daniels of Georgetown University's Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life, and Josh Good of the Religion & Society Program, with moderation by Vivian Schiller of Aspen Digital.
The much-awaited encyclical sets a sweeping vision for the future of AI. The document extends well beyond theology and lays out very specific recommendations that prioritize human flourishing and dignity, ranging from safety regulation to job-retraining to education. As fast-moving technologies continue to reshape lives and livelihoods, how has the letter been received? What impact might it have—including in the technology sector? In a global, interconnected society, how does the Catholic Church view its responsibility to cultivate human well-being and stand in solidarity with “least of these”?
